How Chisel Gauntlet Works

Chisel Gauntlet is a high-pressure 3D spatial memory and sculpting trial created by Mike Klubnika. Workers stand before personal workbenches containing solid 3×3 stone voxel cubes (27 total sub-blocks). Overhead Jumbotron monitors project a target geometric sculpture for a brief inspection period, after which participants must chisel away non-essential stone blocks to replicate the blueprint precisely.

Core Mechanics

3x3 Voxel Coordinate & Mental Encoding System

A solid 3×3 stone cube comprises 27 individual voxel blocks. Memorizing all 27 blocks visually in under 5 seconds is difficult under pressure. Instead, divide the cube into three horizontal layers:

Verbal Chunking Technique

Rather than trying to visualize an abstract 3D rotating shape, convert the blueprint into a three-part verbal formula:

• Example: “Top corners gone, middle cross removed, bottom full.”
• Encoding the pattern as words rather than images protects your memory from fading if you look down at your workbench or if an opponent’s hammer noise distracts you.

Phase-by-Phase Walkthrough

Phase 1: The Jumbotron Inspection Phase

During the initial 5 seconds, all workbenches remain locked behind glass shields:

• Stare directly at the rotating Jumbotron model.
• Identify the negative space (the blocks that are missing), not the blocks that remain. In almost all patterns, the blueprint removes between 4 and 14 blocks. It is vastly faster to memorize 6 missing coordinates than 21 intact coordinates.
• Notice update v2.0 camera behavior: in couch co-op, the camera displays a full-screen view of the Jumbotron before splitting into individual player quadrants when carving starts.

Phase 2: The Carving Sequence

When the glass barrier lifts, begin chiseling:

1. Carve the Top Layer First: Always chisel from top to bottom. Removing top blocks opens line of sight to inner middle-layer blocks.
2. Double-Click Perimeter Corners: Corner voxels require only a single clean hammer strike to detach.
3. Verify the Core Block: Block [14] at the exact geometric center is rarely visible from outside. Rotate your workbench turntable (Q and E keys) to inspect inner voids.
4. Hit the Submit Button: Walk up to the green pedestal button and slap it the moment your sculpture matches the blueprint. Submitting early locks in your survival and applies time pressure to trailing opponents.

Phase 3: Recovering from Mis-Clicks with the Reset Lever

If you accidentally chip off an essential structural block, do not try to patch it:

• Immediately pull the orange Reset Lever on the left workbench rail.
• A pneumatic ram clears the pedestal and drops a fresh solid 27-block cube within 1.5 seconds.
• Recite your verbal formula and execute the cuts with rapid, deliberate strikes.

The Flourished Memories achievement requires surviving a round until the maximum number of cube segments have been chiseled away:

Farming Flourished Memories

1. Advanced patterns with extreme voxel removal rates appear in later rounds of Original mode or during custom Arcade matches with high difficulty toggles.
2. When a sparse, skeletal pattern appears on the Jumbotron (where only a minimal central spine or thin outer arch remains), focus entirely on precision.
3. Chisel away the required 16+ blocks, double-check your turntable angles, and submit cleanly to pop Flourished Memories.
